ABOUT THE BREED
The Spanish introduced horses to Mexico in the 1500s. Following the Pueblo Revolt, horses rapidly spread throughout North America, reaching the Northwest around 1700. The Nez Perce tribe became excellent horsemen and breeders, creating large herds renowned for their strength, intelligence and beauty.
Prior to the introduction of the horse, the Nez Perce were sedentary fishers. Horses gave the tribes greater mobility and power, altering their culture forever. Soon, the Nez Perce were famous throughout the Northwest for their hunting skills and craftsmanship. These skills allowed the Nez Perce to trade for necessary goods and services. With their superior horses they had little difficulty killing what buffalo they needed. Soon they began to use the Plains-type tipi in place of their old community houses… Heavy stone mortars and similar burdensome possessions were either discarded entirely, or left at the fishing spots for occasional use.
Famous explorer Meriwether Lewis was appropriately impressed with the breeding accomplishments of the Nez Perce, as noted in his diary entry from February 15, 1806.
Their horses appear to be of an excellent race; they are lofty, eligantly [sic] formed, active and durable… some of these horses are pided with large spots of white irregularly scattered and intermixed with black, brown, bey [sic] or some other dark color.
It is unknown how many of the Nez Perce’s horses were spotted, but a possible estimate is ten percent. Settlers coming into the area began to refer to these spotted horses as "A Palouse Horse", as a reference to the Palouse River, which runs through Northern Idaho. Over time, the name evolved into "Palousey", "Appalousey", and finally "Appaloosa".
In the mid-1800s, settlers flooded onto the Nez Perce reservation, and conflicts soon ensued. The Nez Perce War of 1877 resulted in their herds being dispersed.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, interest in the breed gradually began to grow as Appaloosas began appearing in Western roundups and rodeos.
The Appaloosa’s flashy coat patterns caught the eye of the public, and in 1937 an article in Western Horseman entitled "The Appaloosa, or Palouse Horse" revealed a widespread interest in the breed.
With the goal of preserving and improving the Appaloosa breed, the Appaloosa Horse Club was chartered in 1938. From those first few enthusiasts, the Club has grown into one of the leading equine breed registries in the world.
Appaloosas are a light breed used for showing and riding. Today they are used in a wide variety of sports, from rodeo and trail riding, to show jumping, showing, and endurance riding.
BREED CHARACTERISTICS
The Appaloosa Horse Club describes five basic coat patterns: Leopard - Large dark spots completely covering a white body, Snowflake - a dark body with light spots or speckles, Marble - A light coat covered in small dark speckles, Frost - A dark coat covered in small light speckles, and Blanket - White on hips and/or loins. Darker spots may or may not appear on the white blanket. However, some appaloosa's are 'solid,' meaning that they do not have any coat pattern.
Their height ranges from 14 to 16 hands (56 to 64 inches, 142 to 163 cm). They weight ranges from 950 to 1,250 pounds (430 to 570 kg). Appaloosas are very versatile having great endurance and excellent dispositions. Although they can be stubborn, most Appaloosas are extremely intelligent and willing.

Abbey is in the process of fully recoding the game, and with that means new updates on the horses! Appaloosas will get new horse artwork AND a rework on the genes, which is why I personally picked them. The genes are a little wonky as it stands right now, but with the new recode, Lp and PATn genes will be represented for the Appaloosas in a more correct way Here is a preview of what the Appaloosa artwork will look like after the recode is complete (no pattern examples yet!)
Appaloosas land in the upper portion of being popular on the game. However, that does not mean that all horses are up to par. Be advised, I believe some of the horses in their numbers are due to horses that "died" on players accounts due to insufficient care (this was before the RC) or the numbers are otherwise due to players that have their horses locked on their accounts. The statistics don't lie but I thought this would be good for everyone to see and give us hope to better the breed

It seems like there are a lot of Appaloosas in Western right now, though I know a few people transitioning to Endurance and Show Jumping. Really all specialties could be open through the proper "training" of feed and stats to obtain the speciality field you are going for. We should really have a goal set in place to have at least a few members in each different speciality to help out the other members for that area
RC PROJECT FOR MEMBERS
Now everyone doesn't have to do this if you'd like to save your deletes for something else or your own personal lines usage, but I thought it would be nice to bring it up. When using the Horse Search, I did a search for Appaloosas - highest stats, and while there are 26 pages of Appaloosas on the game... under 100 stats started on page 23. I'd like to this that starting this group will help bring awareness to fellow Appaloosa breeders that that is just not right Please do understand that this does not account for the 3-20 year old horses with less than stellar stats to their age either. Understandably not all of these horses will be sent to the RC, but I'd like to point out that by picking up a horse from the RC with under 100 stats, if by some miracle you get maximum stats everyday or by the use of special treats, you're not likely to catch up to the other horses, based on age/stats. Now I'm sure everyone has their own idea to what they'd like to see in the RC for pickup, so here's my general guidelines:
Under 3 years of age - if under starting stats (120 - 150-ish or less) - delete
3-10 years of age - if under 300 stats - delete*
11-20 years of age - if under 500 stats - delete*
*This can be left up to personal opinion. Obviously you'd be keeping a 3yr old horse with 300 stats
Every horse is going to be different though, and everyone has their own opinions as to what is salvageable for a horses stats on the game. Use the RC for horses at your own risk. I generally tend to follow my own guidelines above and then pick up a anything with a cream or dun modifier, as unaware people are more likely to breed, and overbreed, a horse because it has a "pretty color."
THE PURPOSE OF THE GROUP is to create a place where new players can work with more experienced players. It can be for something as simple as information on the breed or just talking about goals with other breeders. In the end, I am hoping to create an area where new and old can work together to create strong lines and make it easier to find studs for mares or vise versa. The group should make it easy for members to get ahold of quality foals that can be added to their lines or even used for starting a new set of lines. The group should work hard to have good lines that are not deleted. I know we can do it! :3
*Outsiders will not be refused, whether they breed to our standards or not.*
Keep in mind though, benefits will go towards members first and foremost and of course there will be rules to follow. These rules must be agreed upon before the benefits of membership can be experienced.
THE RULES YO
● Horses with offspring will not be deleted. We must make sure to preserve the pedigree of our horses and the future lines.
● There will be a minimum value set for selling/buying horses that is determined by the group. You must agree to sell horses/buy horses at no lower than this price.
● Group members get first dibs at any horse that you want to sell (as long as it is the proper breed). *Feel free to sell to outsiders, but we cannot promise that your lines will be kept safe*
● If you decide to take a leave from the game or quit, please try to sell your stock to members of the breeding group OR lock your account. Do not send horses to the RC UNLESS it will not hurt another player’s lines.
● If you see horses in the RC that belong to a certain breeder, let them know.
● Foals should not be bred below 120 stats. Higher is definitely better, since low stats will not help the group nor yourself.
Stallion + Mare x .25 plus or minus some stats, but generally, you can gauge foals stats using this if you don't already know.
EXTRAS
*Note that these are not rules, but would be awesome if you could follow these as well!*
● Maintain a breeding pair from the store. Having more lines = more diversity = more studs = less inbred horses.
● Line breeding is okay, but avoid using a stud/mare that is closely related.
For more information please contact me.
● Try to have some reasonably/low cost horses available for new players.
● Suggest Appaloosas to new players or players unsure of what to breed!
● Try to not breed more than 5 foals with your mares and 10 with your studs.
Benefits
-Custom foals
-Horse Tokens
-To Delete horses
-Use of studs for a low price
Feel free to advertise horses/future breedings/and looking fors here! Keep in mind anything that is not Appaloosa related will be ignored. This is not a sale thread for other horse breeds.
At some point I will try to have a welcome thing up for new players/breeders, birth announcements, congrats for people who hit awesome goals with their horses.
If anyone wants to add anything please let me know. I am not good at this sort of thing but I am trying!
I will try to get breed specific tags/banners for all to have!
If you don’t want to follow the rules, fine. Although, keep in mind I will be stalking the pages of those who join the club and keeping an eye on their horses. I will try to keep some things organized on my page as well so those who are looking for things can just jump to my page to find what they need. If you ignore the rules I will make sure to put you on a do not buy or interact with list. If you do something out of negative feelings against another player you will be banned from the group and I will ask a mod to delete your posts.
If anything needs to be added/subtracted/changed please let me know and I will gladly do it!
Feel free to PM me with Studs/Looking Fors/For Sales/Birth Announcements and ECT!
